PHILIPPINES - This town is fast becoming as the leading seaweed producer in the Bicol region, reports ABS-CBN News."Seaweed farming provides livelihood for the local people, making Pilar town the leading source of seaweeds in Bicol," said Jose Razel Monzales, chairman of the Pilar Seaweeds Farmers and Traders Association.
Monzales reported the progress of seaweed farming in Pilar town to a team of officials from the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research, who recently visited Bicol to monitor and evaluate DA-BAR’s Community-based Participatory Action Research (CPAR) project on seaweeds.
The CPAR project is aimed at developing seaweed farming methods responsive to the needs of the farmers. It seeks to produce better variety of seaweed plants, and increase seaweed production from three to seven tons per hectare.
Aida Andayog, manager of the Regional Fisheries R & D Center for Bicol region, said the project attempts to define and refine technologies on seaweed farming.
"The farmers themselves manage the seaweed farms, thus allowing them to investigate and observe the comparative advantage of the technology being tested vis-à-vis their practices," she said.
