Mexico Stops All Bluefin Tuna Fishing for Remainder of 2014

16 July 2014

MEXICO - The Mexican government has announced that bluefin tuna fishing will now be halted until the end of 2014.

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), through the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA), notified members of the Pacific Ocean fishing fleet to suspend the catch of this species in 2014 to prevent the catch quota from being exceeded.

The Pacific bluefin tuna is currently hugely overfished to just four per cent of its original size and around 90 per cent of today's catches are of small juveniles which have not had chance to reproduce.
