Government Updates Publication for Suitable Aquaculture Locations

SPAIN - The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development has updated its publication on the best locations for the development of marine aquaculture in Andalusia.

The Andalusian Strategy for the Development of Marine Aquaculture 2014-2020, is intended as a reference tool and works to provide information to the authorities involved in the authorization procedure and to advance planning and processing of new projects and to promote the orderly development of this activity.

Aquaculture is reaching a significant level of development in recent years and may continue to advance in the future, given that the demand for seafood is increasing and production techniques are improving.

Among the factors affecting the successful development and implementation of aquaculture include technological developments, optimization of production processes and marketing improvements, especially around where to locate.

Geographic Information Systems are used as a tool to select sites for aquaculture development.

In recent years there have been a number of recommendations and communications at the European level on integrated coastal zone management and the competition problems of aquaculture vs other coastal users.

In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development has developed a regional strategy for the Development of Marine Aquaculture 2014-2020, which includes 'sectoral planning and site selection', which consists of a series of concrete actions for study of the most suitable for the development of marine aquaculture in Andalusia by determining Areas of Interest for Aquaculture and plans most appropriate for each of these areas harvesting areas.
