Director, Operations at PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture, Peter Dietman said the Fishcare Volunteers are looking for committed and passionate people to join the program, particularly those living in the Eyre Peninsula and Mid North regions.

"This program of wonderful volunteers plays a critical and valuable role in raising the community’s education and awareness about sustainable fishing practices, and the importance of protecting our fish stocks," he said.

Nine Fishcare Volunteer teams operate across the State – Limestone Coast, Victor Harbor Southern Metro, Northern Metro, Yorke Peninsula, Whyalla, Port Lincoln (Eyre Peninsula), Pt Pirie and the Riverland – patrolling both coastal and riverine areas.

During 2013-14 the 90 Fishcare volunteers across the State committed about 6000 hours and spoke to more than 22,000 recreational fishers, helping to spread the sustainable fishing message.

"The fact is many of them are recreational fishers themselves, and through their love of fishing they are helping to ensure future generations of fishers will enjoy healthy and sustainable fish stocks into the future," Mr Dietman said.

"While we are specifically looking for volunteers in the Pt Lincoln, Whyalla and Pt Pirie areas, the invitation is extended to all like-minded volunteers across the State who enjoy a love of fishing and are looking to give something back to their community.

"In South Australia an estimated 236,000 men, women and children engage in fishing each year and we hope that as many of you as possible will put your hand up and join PIRSA’s Fishcare Volunteer program."

The Fishcare volunteers will be on hand at the PIRSA tent during the forthcoming Eyre Peninsula Field Days and will also be attending the Whyalla Show to answer any questions on the program from prospective volunteers.
