More Can Tho Pangasius Farms to Sign Up to Sustainable Certification

VIET NAM - According to Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Can Tho, total aquaculture area of the city in the first seven months of 2014 was 8,100 hectares, up 1.19 per cent year on year.

Aquaculture harvests reached 77,320 MT, up 7.73 per cent year on year, reports VASEP.

The aquaculture production in the area is currently heading towards more sustainable production, better food safety, environmental sanitation and high quality products in order to meet the domestic and export demands as well as to improve efficiency.

The province has 53 hectares of fish farming fulfilling Global GAP, ASC, BMP, GAP and other standards. Most of these farms grow pangasius.

The province plans to expand the total fish farming areas with these standards to 127 hectares, consisting of one hectare with VietGAP standards, 25 hectares meeting GlobalGAP, 34 hectares fulfilling BMP and 67 hectares certified by ASC.
