Government Announces Start of Seasonal Hake Fishing Ban

01 September 2014

ECUADOR - The Secretariat of the Deputy Minister of Fisheries Aquaculture and Fisheries has announced that the second closed fishing season for hake (Merluccius gayi) will be from 1 to 30 September 2014.

Molke Mendoza, director of Control of Fishery Resources, said that this fishery is new in Ecuador and has systems and regulations that do not allow industrial fishing vessels to trawl hake.

In addition, Mendoza noted that 20 per cent of vessels engaged in this fishery have observers on board. This allows capture information to be used to make future decisions.
