Weekly Overview: EU to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance in Aquatic Animals

16 September 2014

ANALYSIS - The European Commission has adopted proposals on veterinary medicinal products and medicated feed, to improve the health and well-being of animals (including aquatic species) and to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), writes Lucy Towers, TheFishSite Editor.

The proposal on veterinary medicinal products aims in particular to make more medicines available in the EU to treat and prevent diseases in animals.

The National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) has backed the move to improve the availability of veterinary medicines throughout Europe.

NOAH chief executive Phil Sketchley said: “NOAH will be looking at the detail of the texts in the coming days and weeks, and reviewing their potential impact.

Marine Harvest has announced it plans to expand its Chilean salmon farming operations through the purchase of assets of the former Chilean farming company Acuinova which is currently in bankruptcy.

The assets, which have the capacity to produce about 40,000 tonnes Head On Gutted (HOG) per annum, include a hatchery, smolt facility, 36 sea water licences and a primary and secondary processing facility.

Also in the news, the new EU Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has been announced as Mr Karmenu Vella. Mr Vella was born in Malta in 1950 and has previously acted as the Maltese Minister for Tourism.

Speaking on the announcement, Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation said that it is essential that Mr Vella listens to the concerns of fishermen.

"As things stand at the moment, the discards ban has the potential to devastate our industry and it is essential that Mr Vella takes these real fears on board and works with us to develop a practicable regime," continued Mr Armstrong.
