There is no bacterium or virus at the root of this disease. Consequently the disease itself has so far not been proven infectious in the lab.
Still, the mortality is high and experts have shown that it is in fact a secondary Vibrio infection that is causing the mortality.
Halamid® is used on a global scale to protect fish and shrimp from pathogenic microorganisms. It destroys bacteria and virus particles in fish tanks, raceways, ponds and cages without harmful effects to the fish.
In the USA the FDA has approved Halamid® Aqua for treatment of salmonids against bacterial gills diseases.
Proper biosecurity measures that keep bacterial loads low are often impossible due to the toxicity of many disinfectants towards young shrimp at the effective levels required. Independent tests have shown that Vibrio parahaemolyticus, listed as the most prominent cause of secondary infections in EMS affected shrimp, are killed by Halamid®. It has a relatively low toxicity towards fish and shrimp and offers the possibility to keep Vibrio parahaemolyticus, under control.
