It will be given by the Buckland Professor for 2014, Dr Malcolm Windsor, OBE, former Secretary of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO), and sometime member of the Defra Chief Scientist’s Group.

The lecture is based on a first-hand view of the complex scientific, political, economic and human factors affecting the conservation by international cooperation of migratory species using the Atlantic salmon as the example.

The lecture will comprise 40 minutes plus questions and discussion, and is open to members of the public and to students, free of charge.

It will be delivered at 5pm on 16 October 2014 in the Read Lecture Theatre, Imperial College, South Kensington, London. The Read is on level 5 of the Sherfield Building, accessed via the South Kensington Campus Main Reception on the west side of Exhibition Road.

*The Buckland Foundation sponsors a Buckland Professor annually to deliver an open lecture on a contemporary topic in fisheries science, in honour of Frank Buckland, a 19th century Army surgeon, naturalist, and bon viveur, who was Inspector of Salmon Fisheries from 1867-1880 and who pioneered public communication on many marine issues. In 1920, the family left the proceeds of his estate to establish the Foundation in order to continue this communication. The Foundation will be represented at the Lecture by Dr Colin Bannister (Trustee and Vice Chairman).
