The Official Gazette (DOF) specifies that the temporary ban applies to the commercial species: yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), bigeye tuna or bigeye (Thunnus obesus), bluefin (Thunnus orientalis) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis).

The ban temporarily prohibits Mexican flagged purse seiners from catching these species in the high seas and foreign waters that are in the area regulated by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC).

The tuna fishery is one of the main productive activities in Mexico, for its contribution to the national food industry and generating employment and foreign exchange.
