Odisha has 121,000 hectares (ha) total water area available in ponds and tanks, but only 80,000 ha has been used for aquaculture.

Fish farming in both new and renovated ponds, eco-hatcheries, integrated farming with horticulture and livestock, fish seed banks and aqua shops have been included in the scheme along with the farm models.

After the scheme is fully implemented, Nabard hopes to increase the productivity of ponds from the present level of 1000 kg per acre of pond to at least 2000 kg per acre.

The latest Fisheries of the United States 2013 report states that in 2012, US aquaculture production was 594 million pounds with a value of $1.23 billion.

The production volume reflects a decrease from the totals of recent years, mostly reflecting a decline in domestic catfish production.

In terms of commercial fisheries, the report revealed that US fishermen landed 9.9 billion pounds of fish and shellfish, an increase of 245 million pounds from 2012.

Valued at $5.5 billion, these landings represent an increase of $388 million from 2012.

The government of Victoria, Australia, is working to develop the state’s sea urchin fishery by introducing a new licensing and quota system, providing fishers with more secure access and business certainty.

The new system will give urchin fishers greater security and confidence to invest in their businesses and to develop local and overseas markets, said Ross McGowan, Fisheries Victoria Executive Director.
