Weekly Overview: Guidance Offered on New Fish Product Labelling Laws

25 November 2014

ANALYSIS - From 13 December 2014, the EU will implement new rules on information which must be included on the labels of some fish products, writes Lucy Towers, TheFishSite Editor.

Some fish products must also provide customers with details on the type of fishing gear used to catch the fish and, for some fishing areas (Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black Sea), a more precise catch location with the name of the sub area or division is required.

In order to help facilitate changes, Seafish has published a guidance document, which aims to support industry to adapt to key legislative changes around information to be made available to seafood consumers.

Benchmark Holdings PLC, owner of TheFishSite, is to acquire two major aquaculture breeding companies to create a world-leading salmon and aquaculture breeding business.

By combining Norwegian-based SalmoBreed and Icelandic company Stofnfiskur, Benchmark will bring together the strengths of SalmoBreed in genetics with Stofniskur’s unique capability to supply fertile ova 52 weeks of the year.

Benchmark Chief Executive Officer, Malcolm Pye, commented: "We are delighted to be making today’s announcement. The acquisitions are a great fit for Benchmark."

In oyster news, Sweden has reported its first ever outbreak of ostreid herpesvirus-1 microvariant. The outbreak at a farm in Sydkoster, Strömstad, led to the death of 15,000,000 Pacific oysters.

The deadly bacteria that almost destroyed two large oyster hatcheries in the Pacific Northwest has been mistakenly identified for years, according to new US research.

The primary bacteria causing oyster larval death was thought to be Vibrio tubiashii. Now, however, scientists believe the problem was caused by Vibrio coralliilyticus, a close cousin that is now known to be even more virulent to Pacific oysters.
