The plan aims to promote the recovery of the species and the promotion of responsible fishing off the coast of Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

The grouper fishery is a major activity in the region, as its commercial exploitation generates economic benefits of more than 351 million pesos for 16,000 families in the main fishing ports of both entities.

This Fishery Management Plan, published in the Official Journal of the Federation, is aimed at promoting the conservation of red grouper (Epinephelus morio) and associated species in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Among the actions that the document points to protect young fish and highlights the proposal to extend the closure period for all species of grouper. Biological studies will also be conducted to understand the impact of restricting fishing in the recovery of this resource.
