Spanish Fisheries Must Find Sustainability, Socioeconomic Balance

SPAIN - The Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Isabel Garca Tejerina, has stated that Spain shares the European Commission's objective of achieving sustainability of fisheries resources but the country must make it compatible with the socio-economic sustainability.

"In other words, we must find the balance between the time to achieve this sustainable maintenance of resources and the socio-economic interests of the sector".

Isabel García Tejerina was speaking at the entrance of the EU Council of Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries, where improvements in the Total Allowable Catches (TACs) and quotas, "in defense of the interests of Spanish fishermen" are being negotiated.
