Herring Fishery Closure to Protect Stocks

02 January 2015

AUSTRALIA - A daily bag limit of 12 for recreational fishers and closure of the commercial South Coast G-net Fishery will come into force on 1 March 2015, to help the recovery of herring stocks.

This follows the release late last year of research by our scientists that showed the herring stock was in a depleted state and demonstrated that the overall catch of herring needed to be halved.

Environmental factors and fishing pressure have been identified as the causes of the problem.

The Australian government has successfully tackled similar challenges in recent times. For example, management measures put in place have started to reverse a decline in demersal (bottom-dwelling) fish stocks.
