Print This Page Chile: 13 salmon farms under fire for overproduction
CHILE - The Tenth Region’s environmental body (Corema) began a sanctionatory process against 13 salmon farms, the largest process ever undertaken since the new environmental protection law was passed.Corema’s acting director, Mario Sanhueza, reported that the salmon farms will be sanctioned for grossly surpassing their authorised production levels, which in some cases reached up to eleven times the levels authorised in the environmental qualification resolutions.
Sanhueza said that they do not have fixed dates but the process began with the notification of sanctions on May 30, then the affected companies will appeal in writing, after which the Monitoring Operative Committee (COF) will evaluate the companie’s arguments and finally propose a monetary sanction (fine).
On May 31, the salmon industry reacted with unusual energy, and requested the Government to rectify the sanctions.
