Weekly Overview: Work On-going to Determine Virus Y Relationship to New Trout Disease

03 March 2015

ANALYSIS - In this week's news, The Norwegian Veterinary Institute has released more information on the new disease, which was detected in freshwater rainbow trout in 2013.

Although a new virus - virus Y- was discovered, it is still not characterised and it is not yet confirmed if virus Y causes the disease or not.

During 2015, work will continue to clarify the relationship between the disease and virus Y in rainbow trout and salmon and the National Veterinary Institute in cooperation with the Food Safety Authority will implement a monitoring programme to investigate the prevalence of virus Y.

In order to improve the quality of fish in Africa, the FAO has helped to develop new and easy-to-assemble fish drying technology.

The new smoking technology is helping to reduce health hazards, improve food safety and quality, improve working conditions and cut down food losses in West African fishing villages.

Also in the news this week, a new outbreak of Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) has been reported on a Chilean salmon farm.

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca) reported that outbreak was discovered on a Salmones Cupquelan S.A. farm in the Aysen region of Chile. The variant is HPR 3.
