INDONESIA - An Indonesian government minister urged member nations of the Asian-African Conference this week to end fisheries subsidies that may trigger environmental destruction.

Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Indroyono Soesilo suggested that the maritime conference member countries abide by the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) stipulations on the subsidies, reports JakartaPost.

He said: "We have to prohibit certain forms of fisheries subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing.

"We should also eliminate subsidies that contribute to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and refrain from introducing new such subsidies.

"We should also recognise that appropriate and effective special and differential treatment for developing and least-developed countries should be an integral part of the WTO fisheries subsidies negotiation."

The minister mentioned the need to minimise and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels.

He added: "We need to establish a global program to prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution."
