SalmonChile Reports Salmon and Trout Losses from Volcanic Eruption

28 April 2015

CHILE - The eruption of the Calbuco volcano is estimated to have caused the loss of Atlantic and Coho salmon brood stock and Atlantic salmon and trout smolt and fry farmed by SalmonChile.

All of the effected SalmonChile workers are in perfect condition and still have their jobs, although in some cases they will be relocated, given that the facilities suffered considerable damage.

Although there is no official information on the freshwater phase, losses of nine per cent of Atlantic salmon smolts and fry and three per cent of trout fry and smolts is estimated.

This totals around 21 million fish out of a total of 257 million fish existing in this phase of production.

SalmonChile did however say that the first phase of salmon production is a growth stage that can be replaced, so the potential losses, although they are not quantifiable in advance, should be less than what was stated above.

The harvest of these effected fish would also not be until 2017.

Around 3,800 thousand Atlantic salmon brood fish, equivalent to 0.4 per cent of the breeding of this species, is also expected to be lost.

For Coho salmon, there is a loss of approximately 11,000 brood fish, equivalent to five per cent of the breeding of this species.
