The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) announced it had released its new landmark report which showcases the key environmental and social data from all of its 14 member companies.

The report provides member data for: fish escapes, fish mortality, antibiotic use, sea lice levels, sea lice treatments, wildlife interactions, use of marine ingredients in feed, compliance, occupational health and safety, and interactions with the local community.

“The launch of GSI’s Sustainability Report demonstrates the group’s leadership in creating greater transparency across the aquaculture sector. It is a remarkable achievement that they have developed this collective reporting platform, and we strongly encourage other production sectors and platforms to follow suit,” said Piers Hart, Global Lead for Aquaculture at WWF.

In market news, Marine Harvest and AquaChile have decided to end their merger process due to both companies failing to reach a joint final agreement.

Marine Harvest will now continue to develop its current farming assets in Chile through its wholly-owned subsidiary MH Chile.

Cooke Aquaculture has signed an agreement to purchase Wanchese Fish Company based in Suffolk, Virginia, US.

This deal and investment into the wild fishery will create a new company, Cooke Seafood USA Inc.

“This purchase is an exciting venture for us as we add a well-respected, family-owned and vertically integrated fishing company to our family’s businesses,” said Glenn Cooke, CEO of the newly formed Cooke Seafood USA Inc.
