Northern Prawn Fishery Commended for Sustainability Focus

13 July 2015

AUSTRALIA - Senator Richard Colbeck, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, has congratulated the Northern Prawn Fishery Industry for taking initiative to ensure the sustainability of their industry into the future.

Senator Colbeck last night launched the Northern Prawn Fishery 2015-18 Bycatch Strategy at an event in Brisbane.

“The Northern Prawn Fishery Industry Association has taken the initiative to include a target to reduce bycatch by 30 per cent over three years,” Senator Colbeck said.

“I congratulate the Northern Prawn Fishery Industry for identifying the need to take action around this issue and taking the lead in committing to this target. Their commitment to continuous improvement is outstanding and they are setting a good example for the rest of the industry to follow.”

“Fishers are often the best conservationists when it comes to the health of our oceans – they rely on healthy fisheries for their livelihood and are committed to the long-term sustainability of our oceans.”

Senator Colbeck said the action taken by the Northern Prawn Fishery Industry was yet another example that the community can have confidence in Australia’s fisheries management.

“Our fisheries are world class, well managed and based on the best available science. The commitment of industry to strong and sustainable fisheries management is key to ensuring that Australia remains a global leader in sustainable fisheries management,” he said.

The strategy will be led by the Northern Prawn Fishery Industry through co-management arrangements with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and through support from research agencies, including CSIRO.
