Wal-Mart Division Seafood Director to Speak at Aquaculture Seminar

Post-harvest

US - A representative of Sams Club is among the speakers featured at a one-day seminar on the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party certification programme.

The seminar will take place at the Puerto Montt Manquehue Hotel in Puerto Montt, Chile, on July 28.

Robert Fields, senior merchandise director-fresh meat, seafood and deli for Sam’s Club, a division of Wal-Mart, will address the push for four-star BAP status, which denotes that a product originates from a BAP-certified processing plant, farm, hatchery and feed mill.

It’s the highest such achievement in the BAP programme. Fields will also discuss challenges and opportunities in the US market for Chilean companies.

Part of the inaugural “BAP Made In” campaign, the seminar is designed to communicate the value of the BAP program.

Leading the seminar are BAP Facilities Development Manager Marcos Moya, BAP Director Bill More and BAP VP of Market Development Peter Redmond.

Among the topics to be addressed are the fundamentals of the BAP program and the international market value of the BAP program, along with topical issues such as antibiotic use in aquaculture.

The BAP salmon farm standards, BAP finfish and crustacean farm standards and the seafood processing plant standards will also be discussed.

The aim of the “BAP Made In” campaign is to unite farmers, processors and other stakeholders behind the concept of responsible aquaculture and third-party certification, and to educate them on the latest BAP initiatives.
