Viet Nam Improves Shrimp Quality, Productivity

VIET NAM - New measures and techniques have been applied to enhance productivity and quality of shrimp farming.

Through June 2015, shrimp farming area increased by 89 per cent to 540,000 hectares.

Around 12.5 per cent of total area was for whiteleg shrimp but this species accounted for 57 per cent of total production.

Meanwhile, 87 per cent of the area was for black tiger shrimp. This species made up 43 per cent of total production. Shrimp production in 2014 reached 658,000 MT, adding 120,000 MT from 2013.

In 2014, in Mekong Delta, pangasius was reared in 5,500 hectares, yeilding 1.1 million MT. This year, tilapia will be farmed both in the north and in the south.

In 2014, tilapia was cultured in 16,000 hectares and 410,000 metres cubed of cages, with average yield of over 6 MT/ hectare. Tilapia and red tilapia production reached 125,000 MT, up 25 per cent from 2013.

New technologies have been applied in order to save water, minimize the discharge pollutants. Trung Son Corp in Kien Giang, Viet Uc JSC and Truc Anh production and trading company in Bac Lieu are typical ones.
