Seafood Industry Pleased to See Korean Oyster Ban

NEW ZEALAND - The New Zealand Seafood Industry Council welcomes the NZFSA (New Zealand Food Safety Authority) decision to halt the import of Korean Oysters, said General Manager, Trade and Information Alastair Macfarlane.

“We are very happy with the decision. New Zealanders will be able to consume oysters with confidence and it will remove confusion about what’s safe and what isn’t, what can be eaten raw or has to be cooked.”

All oysters are not equal, Mr Macfarlane said. New Zealand water quality is second to none and the regulations to maintain it are strictly adhered to.

“We have exceptionally high standards for our own oysters. It’s been a great concern that people should become ill from imported product and start to question New Zealand oysters,” he said. “People can be confident that they’re getting something special when they choose home-grown oysters.”
