Agri-foods Giant Cargill Enters Salmon Feed Market

19 August 2015

GLOBAL – Food processing and commodity multinational Cargill is hoping to acquire leading Norwegian salmon nutrition company EWOS in the second aquaculture announcement from Cargill in as many months.

The €1.35 billion agreement is expected to close before the year end following regulatory approval.

The transaction is to include seven feed manufacturing facilities – three in Norway and one each in Chile, Canada, Scotland and Viet Nam -as well as two research and development centres, located in Norway and Chile.

The announcement builds on July’s $30 million joint venture with Naturista to build a shrimp feed facility in Ecuador.

Saren Lin, president of Cargill’s Feed and Nutrition segment, said EWOS, producing over 1.2 million metric tons of feed, is a “winning company”.

She said: “Adding its industry-leading talent and capabilities as well as its thought leadership in sustainable business practices will be transformational for our aquaculture nutrition business.”

EWOS CEO, Einar Wathne, said: “Cargill and EWOS will create a new, world-class aqua feed supply capability that will support the growth potential for fish and seafood consumption and create new opportunities for customers and employees alike.

“EWOS has a strong brand and a deep commitment to high product quality, its people and sustainable aquaculture. Adding Cargill’s vast resources and global reach to EWOS’ leading R&D expertise, will allow the new organization to provide world-class, innovative products and solutions to the global aqua industry.”
