Weekly Overview: New Report Examines UK Angling Vs Commercial Fishing

01 September 2015

ANALYSIS - A new report has been published that aims to help the UK seafood industry and policy makers to evaluate and compare the economic importance of sea angling and commercial fishing, with the hope that it will provide a blueprint for future comparisons of the sectors which has previously been a thorny issue on both sides.

The report, issued by Seafish on behalf of UKFEN, evaluates and recommends different economic analysis methods for comparing the value of industry sectors and informing policy questions about allocation of resources, to achieve efficiency or fairness of distribution of quotas.

It also looks at other important elements, such as resource allocation, economic efficiency and distributional policy, distinguishing between political objectives, social justice, fairness, benefit maximisation and economic efficiency.

In aquaculture news, the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has launched a National Aquaculture Master Plan for the country which aims to raise freshwater aquaculture production to 4,000 tonnes a year by 2023.

National newspaper, New Era, also reported that the ministry aims to increase marine aquaculture production from 525 to 5,500 tonnes by 2023.

“The National Aquaculture Master Plan for Marine Aquaculture was commissioned with the purpose to identify key areas and to provide a road map for sustainable development of marine aquaculture, generating socio-economic benefits to the people of Namibia,” said Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernhard Esau.
