Fisheries Experts to Hold Workshop on Shrimp Diseases

INDIA - Officials of Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) in association with Department of Fisheries will organise a state-level workshop on ‘Shrimp Disease Surveillance and Capacity Building’ at Hotel D.V. Manor on October 1.

Experts from the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), a research wing of MPEDA, Chennai, and National Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture (NaCSA), a unit of Ministry of Commerce and Industry for implementing better management practices in aquaculture, will speak on observation and diagnosis of diseases in shrimp varieties, reports TheHindu.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a meeting with MPEDA Chairman Leena Nair recently and discussed on giving a boost to shrimp and fish production and exports from the State.

Mr Naidu asked MPEDA and Fisheries Department officials to organise a meeting to discuss the diseases causing loss to fish farmers and how to prevent them, said MPEDA Deputy Director (Aquaculture) S. Kandan.

Commissioner of Fisheries Ram Shankar Nayak will explain on the laboratories being manned by Fisheries Department and the measures being taken by the government to promote aquaculture.

The Fisheries Department will elucidate the steps being taken to prevent diseases in aquaculture through State Institute of Fisheries Technology.

RGCA Project Director Y.C. Rhanpi Sam Raj will explain on the objectives of disease surveillance programme and Deputy PD Jaideep Kumar will detail the farmers, officials and other participants on the action plan on disease observation, data and sample collection, compilation and despatch to RGCA. NaCSA in-charge Chief Executive Officer Shanmuka Rao will participate.

A practical session on collection, fixation, preservation of shrimp samples, operation of brood stock multiplication centre and bio-security requirements and role of aquatic quarantine facility in ascertaining the Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) status in imported L. Vannamei brood stock and other topics would also be discussed, the MPEDA Deputy Director said.

A practical session on collection, fixation, preservation of shrimp samples, operation of brood stock multiplication centre and bio-security requirements and quarantine facility will be organised.
