Weekly Overview: New Understanding of Salmon Gut Bacteria to Help Industry Sustainability

17 November 2015

ANALYSIS - Researchers from around the world are paving the way for a more ecologically sustainable salmon farming industry with the first complete picture of wild Atlantic salmon gut bacteria.

As the industry attempts to move farmed Atlantic Salmon to more sustainable plant-based feeds, understanding the role of their gut bacteria becomes vital

After two years intensive sampling from adult salmon feeding grounds in West Greenland, returning adults and freshwater juvenile salmon in Canada and Ireland, researchers from the UK, Ireland, Canada and the US have developed the first compete picture of wild Atlantic Salmon gut bacterial diversity across the distribution of the species and taken an important step towards understanding the role of salmon gut bacteria in salmon health.

In market news this week, MSD Animal Health announced that it is to acquire animal vaccine company Harrisvaccines.

Rick DeLuca, president, MSD Animal Health, stated: “Combining Harrisvaccines’ R&D and portfolio of products with our strong capabilities and global reach will enable us to address even more devastating diseases that are impacting production animals and reinforce our commitment to the science of healthier animals.”

French company Labeyrie Fine Foods is to acquire a 50 per cent stake in Aqualande, in a move to help strengthen and develop France's aquaculture sector.

The partnership between the two companies will allow them to consolidate knowledge and expertise of fish smoking and preparation. It will also strengthen Aqualande's role as a European forerunner in fresh and saltwater aquaculture.

Also, Chinese company Sino Agro Food has begun the creation of a separate aquaculture company, comprised of its aquaculture operations, which it hopes will be listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

Creating a separate entity is part of the company's vision to become a leading aquaculture company. This is the first of three or four planned divestitures.
