Print This Page Scientists see huge potential in captive-bred seahorses
VIETNAM - Scientists at the Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography in the south central province of Khanh Hoa have bred three species of seahorses in captivity.Trade in seahorses, which are used in Chinese traditional medicine and in home aquariums, promises to be more lucrative than other kinds of aquaculture, the institute’s scientists say.
In recent years, scientists around the world have been racing to find the best way of breeding the seahorse, which is in danger of extinction in the wild.
The three species of seahorse bred by Vietnamese scientists were the black (Hippocampus kuda), striped (H.comes) and spined (H.spinosisimuss) varieties.
The institute said 5,000 to 7,000 seahorses could be bred monthly using one 20cubic metre aquarium, using plankton for food, which is cheap, nutritious and abundant in Viet Nam.
