EU Reaches Deal on Bluefin Tuna Recovery Plan

08 April 2016

EU - On 6 April 2016, the Netherlands Presidency and European Parliament representatives reached an agreement in principle on a proposal aimed at implementing measures of the recovery plan for Bluefin tuna in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

The agreement must still be validated by the Coreper (Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Council) and by the European Parliament.

The proposal is aimed at transposing into Union law measures of the multiannual Bluefin tuna recovery plan in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean adopted by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) at its annual meetings between 2012 and 2014 (notably recommendation 14-04).

Following this agreement, the Dutch minister for Agriculture, Martijn van Dam, commented: "I would like to commend the work of all parties involved. This agreement allows us to be in line with the latest international recommendations for the protection and conservation of Bluefin tuna, and the sustainable exploitation of responsible fishing activities".

The multiannual recovery plan for Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), which applies from 2007 until 2022, was recommended by the ICCAT. The EU is a contracting party to the ICCAT.

The Commission submitted its proposal to the Council and the European Parliament on 24 April 2015.
