Weekly Overview: Sustainability Concerns Mean Tesco Stops Selling Some Canned Tuna

GLOBAL - UK supermarket Tesco has announced that it is to stop selling some of the John West canned tuna range due to sustainability issues.

Following a review of suppliers' sustainability plans a number of core John West lines will be de-listed by the end of July.

Tesco plans to work with John West on its remaining lines to convert them to sustainable tuna sources as soon as possible.

In Australia, the Western Australia's first Aquaculture WA State Forum has identified six key areas which will be the foundation of a proposed 10-year plan to develop aquaculture in the state.

Among the key areas are; reducing red tape, identifying new aquaculture zones, promoting the industry's investment potential and research and development.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said a co-ordinated regional development approach is an immediate priority and called for shared resources and focus across regions and State Government departments.

In other news, Polish fish industry players have increased their export sales of salmon, herring and cod during the first five months of this year.

Polish companies expanded their salmon exports by 6.9 per cent to a total of 27,000 tonnes. The sales generated revenues of some PLN 1.25 billion (€286 million), an increase of 12.7 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.

Herring export sales were up by 2.3 per cent to 22,400 tonnes.
