Print This Page Fish nearing extinction successfully multiplied
VIETNAM - The Ho Chi Minh City-based Research Institute for Aquaculture No 2 has successfully multiplied two species of fish that are nearing extinction, reported local authorities Thursday.Pham Van Khanh, director of the institute’s Center for Southern Freshwater Species in Mekong Delta’s Tien Giang province, confirmed his center has successfully multiplied two species of fish, cá hô (giant barb - Catlocarpio siamensis) and cá trà sóc (Probarbus jullieni).
The two species are carnivorous, and mainly distributed in the lower Mekong basin, common in both Vietnam and Cambodia.
The carp fish populations have declined seriously in recent years due to over fishing.
At maturity, cá hô, also called ‘the king of fish,’ could reach a maximum weight of 300kg and 3m in length, while cá trà sóc grow to 2m in length.
