Canada reported its first case of whirling disease back in August this year in Johnson Lake in Banff National Park.

According to the CFIA, since then, there have eight more confirmed outbreaks in rivers within the National Park and one positive finding in a hatchery in Alberta.

The commercial aquaculture hatchery is not named due to province privacy regulations.

CFIA made the positive finding after it carried out surveillance sampling at commercial fish stocking facilities in the Alberta state.

Speaking to the Calgary Herald, Travis Ripley, executive director of the Fish and Wildlife policy branch with Alberta Environment and Parks, commented: “There’s one that has come back positive... I was disappointed in the result … and I am somewhat surprised.”
