Finfish Study 2016: EU Fish Consumption is Growing

EU - The 2016 AIPCE-CEP Finfish Study provides key figures on recent developments in the EU seafood market. The most recent report has found that the EU is the biggest trading bloc and fish consumption is growing.

Main findings for the year 2015 include:

  • Total market supply is down at 14.1 million tonnes
  • Imported volume is down to 8.98 million tonnes
  • All species total EU catches marginally up 1.4 per cent at 5.156 million tonnes
  • Share of imports slightly up at 63.5 per cent
  • Net consumption marginally up 0.2kg/capita to 24.1kg
  • EU catches for whitefish species have increased 4.6 per cent and quota utilisation has improved significantly to 80.6 per cent.
  • Fish Exports down sharply by 16.5 per cent to 1.913 million tonnes
  • Wild capture whitefish import dependency slightly reduced to 88 per cent
  • Salmon is the No 1 species by live weight but Tuna and Cod all above 1 million tonnes of resource use – significant in global terms
  • Trend for primary processing in Europe appears to be consolidating
  • Internal supply is showing signs of recovery but imports remain the backbone of the industry
