Print This Page First major marine farm on New Zealand's West Coast gets go-ahead
NEW ZEALAND - The Ministry of Fisheries says it is confident a major marine farm development approved in south Westland will not have a detrimental effect on the environment.The 45ha mussel farm, which is the first of its kind on the West Coast, will be based in Jackson Bay, near Haast.
The ministry's aquaculture manager, Daniel Lees, says the application was thoroughly investigated by the ministry, West Coast Regional Council, and the Environment Court.
He says while mussel farms can affect local marine environments, this one should be fine.
