Vietnam Urges New Measures To Boost Aquaculture Exports

VIETNAM - Progressive trade promotion, seeking new markets and accurate forecasting of product consumption are considered as important and urgent measures needed to help the aquaculture sector to boost its exports.

These measures have been strengthened since early this year and the results in the export of aquatic products have been positive. Despite increasing trade barriers, the export turnover of aquatic products in the first eight months surpassed US$2 billion, an annual increase of 21.4 percent, and aquatic products remain as one of Viet Nam's four key export commodities.

The prices of export aquatic products are predicted to continue increasing due to rising demand as a result of the bird flu problem, and supplies remain at the same level. The yearly target of US$2.8 billion from aquatic exports is likely be achieved.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries, in addition to overcoming difficulties in major markets such as the US, the EU and Japan, active trade promotion in other markets, including Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, Canada and China, is regarded as an important step in expanding Viet Nam's aquatic export markets.
