Scots seek to build on salmon export success

Salmonids Economics +2 more

Scottish producers exported 75,000 tonnes of salmon, worth 451 million, to buyers in 60 countries last year.

The statistic has been revealed on the eve of the Seafood Expo Global, the world’s largest seafood show, which opens in Brussels today. A delegation of Scottish producers will be in attendance, in a bid to strengthen international trade links.

Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO) said: “Scottish salmon is a high-quality food with a well-established global fan base spanning many years and 60 countries. Despite a rise in market prices last year resulting from growing international demand for the UK’s favourite fish, and Scotland’s number one food export, consumer demand has remained unchanged. It’s clear that high quality produce and delicious taste remain firmly in demand.

“Back home in Scotland, the economic benefits of the industry are obvious to see. Multimillion pound investments in research and development, and production facilities are regularly announced, and farming practices are adapted to reflect the latest innovations. Markets are regularly reviewed and developed, and jobs have evolved into skilled careers thanks to the professional training opportunities that are now in place. These are all essential measures to secure the future sustainability of the industry”.

Seafood Expo Global 2017 will be attended by Cooke Aquaculture Scotland, Loch Duart Salmon, Scottish Quality Salmon, Scottish Seafarms, The Scottish Salmon Company, Wester Ross Salmon and Marine Harvest Scotland.
