Gov fish cage projects benefit Cagayan folk
THE PHILIPPINES - The government's fish cage projects continue to provide source of income for villagers in Sta. Teresita town in Cagayan.Recently, fisherfolks from barangay Simbaluca conducted a harvest field day which featured marine fishcage technology demonstration, a project provided by the municipal government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional office.
With the provision of the fishcage project, the 4-H Club, a recipient of the project expects to harvest a total of 1,125 kilos of bangus from their 5.5 meters by 10 meters fishcage stocked with 5,000 pieces of fingerlings in April this year. Income for the fishcage project is estimated at P58,575 with return of investment at 108.6 percent.
Frederick Unipa, 23, president of the club said the fishcage project is a great help on their income generating projects aside from providing 37 youth members with first hand knowledge on fish culture. "Our members definiotely can learn the basics of culturing fish aside from having a great opportunity to derive income," Unipa said.
He added that they are planning to expand with one more unit of fishcage utilizing the income which was derived from their first venture. The fish cage is one of the 32 established projects in the region designed to showcase adaptability and profitability of the marine cages.
The harvest field day was also supported by the provincial agriculture office of Cagayan who also conducted a harvest field day for semi-intensive culture of tilapia technology demonstration I the same barangay.
The 1,000 square meter fishpond owned by Wilfredo Unipa yielded 643 kilos of tilapia and an income of P45,819 after four months.
Wilfredo Unipa, barangay captain of Simbaluca said that both projects will surely uplift the economic condition of farmers and increase the fish supply in town.
