EU approves new health rules for fish farming

EU - EU agriculture ministers approved new rules Tuesday to improve health and safety standards in the EU's €2.6 billion (US$3.3 billion)-a-year fish farming business.

"The new legislation will help to shape the future of Europe's aquaculture sector," EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said. "It will also ensure that consumers can remain confident in the safety and wholesomeness of seafood farmed in the EU."

The new rules will set stronger health controls for farmed fish and other seafood and set standards for checking for illness among fish. Nations will also have to draw up contingency plans for dealing with outbreaks of contagious diseases.
