Major €2.2 million boost in funding for Irish aquaculture

IRELAND - Irelands Marine Minister John Browne, today announced a package of extra funds to address a number of critical issues currently affecting the Irish aquaculture sector.

The Minister approved a suite of measures with a total value of €2.2 million. This money will be used in a number of ways to assist Irish fish farmers around the coast.

The Minister commented: “Aquaculture is the fastest growing sector of our seafood industry and this package of aid represents an important step in safeguarding the future of the Irish salmon farming industry. The work of BIM, the Irish Salmon Growers and IFA Aquaculture are essential if we are to maintain our position worldwide as a high quality producer of farmed salmon.”

In the salmon farming sector, BIM, in partnership with the Irish Salmon Growers Association and IFA Aquaculture, will take urgent steps to create additional salmon ova hatching capacity to help the sector deal with an ongoing difficulty caused by Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis or IPN. The industry aims to eradicate this pan European fish pathogen from their farms, where it has caused considerable economic hardship. It is completely harmless to humans and has no consumer implications.
