Aquaculture boost for Bulgarian seafood

BULGARIA - Bulgarian fish processor Atlantic Limited is to establish a pilot aquaculture scheme in the country as part of measures to adopt a more sustainable form of fish production.

The Bourgas based company announced it will begin fish farm production of Australian fish Barramundi at its plant with the assistance of Cell Aqua, an Australian aquaculture specialist.

The move highlights the growing importance of aquaculture technologies like fish farming to processors in the sea food industry as populations of fish like Cod and Tuna undergo rapid decline.

The last few years in particular have seen growing scientific concern that fish stocks both within the EU and on a wider global scale are on the brink of collapse.

As a result Scientists, environmental organisations, and the European Commission have been calling on EU member countries to make drastic cuts in fishing quotas for many species, especially cod and tuna.

Cell Aqua's Dale Harris revealed that this growing concern over sustainability in fish stocks, and the quality of fish, is encouraging more processors like Atlantic Limited to look to alternative species like Barramundi, and new technology like aquaculture to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
