Vietnamese Agriculture Needs Greater Support
VIETNAM - Professor Mai Thanh Phung from the southern division of the National Agricultural Promotion Centre spoke with Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam (Vietnam Economic Times) about sustainable agronomy.In addition to the fight against brown hoppers, the agriculture sector is aiming to produce high quality rice for export and develop in a sustainable way. How can scientists help farmers?
To help the agriculture sector develop in a sustainable way, scientists will draw short-term, mid-term and long-term strategies for producing high quality rice for export.
The short-term strategy includes using seedlings that resist brown hoppers and transforming old methods of cultivation being currently used by farmers. I think we could implement intelligent and simultaneous plans to deal with the situation.
Firstly, we can combine rice growing with breeding fish or shrimp as their contrary characteristics will create conditions for fighting virus infestation. This model is environmentally sustainable.
