Fine Gael Fish Industry Plan To Cost Over €500m

IRELAND - Fine Gael has vowed to end the "atmosphere of crisis" that surrounds the marine and inland fishing sector if elected to government.

Unveiling the party's "Ocean of Opportunity" policy document today, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said he was committed to the introduction of an independent department of the marine as part of a strategy for revitalising a flagging sector.

The fishing industry is under pressure because dwindling stocks has to led to an EU-imposed reduction in quotas.

Fine Gael says it plan would lead to the creation 3,000 jobs direct and indirectly, and it includes a commitment of €520 million for the development coastal communities over five years.

Some €320 million will be allocated to fishery harbours, shipping, decommissioning of vessels and personnel and marine research.
