Trout fish farming becoming popular in Kullu

INDIA - An experiment with farming of exotic trout fishes in the Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh has opened up a new avenue for the largely horticulture-based economy of the state.

Trout farming was introduced in Patlikul of Kullu District with Norwegian assistance way back in 1991. The State government has now imported more exotic varieties of trout fish named Arctic Char from Canada to promote extensive trout farming in the state.

Trout fish requires chill water, which is available in the upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh at heights of more than 10,000 feet above sea level.

"There is a company in Canada named Canada Icy Water Private Limited; the fish is named Arctic Char, we have brought it here. Trout fish needs excessive cold water and its growth is more as compared to rainbow, its oxygen demand is also very low.

Moreover, it's stocking density is really good, along with a good production. We have divided these eggs into three zones of Himachal that includes Kullu, Shimla and Chamba. And till now the results have been encouraging," said D K Sharma, Deputy Director Fisheries, Himachal Pradesh.
