NZ Aquaculture bids to secure funding
NEW ZEALAND - New Zealand Aquaculture Ltd starts consulting with the aquaculture sector on Thursday, in a bid to secure funding to take another step toward creating a $1 billion industry by 2025.The Nelson-based organisation wants oyster, salmon and mussel growers to pay a commodity levy and is holding six meetings around the country consulting with the industry.
If the levy is approved, New Zealand Aquaculture would use some of the funding to start implementing its New Zealand aquaculture sector strategy, which is a 10-point plan for growth.
The levy would also be used to pay for research and advocacy for issues impacting on the aquaculture sector.
The first consultation meeting is on Thursday in Invercargill, and meetings are also being held at Nelson, Christchurch, Blenheim, Whangarei and Coromandel.
The Nelson meeting will be held on January 30 at Trailways Motor Inn. About 450 invitations have been issued to the meetings.
New Zealand Aquaculture Ltd chief executive Mike Burrell would not reveal how much the levy would be, as that would be disclosed at the meetings, but said growers would get improved services for their money.
