Print This Page Oil slick abates in Da Nang, Quang Nam, soils Hue
VIET NAM - After blackening beaches and hurting tourism in Da Nang city and Quang Nam province, an oil spill detected last week off central Vietnam has decimated shrimp farms in Thua Thien Hue province. |
nAs the latest central province to be mired in oil, Thua Thien Hue saw 50km of coastline from districts of Phu Loc to Phu Vang greased by the slick in recent days.
Communes of Vinh Hien, Vinh Hai, Vinh My, Vinh An, and Phu Hai were reportedly hit hardest, with local farmers feeling the pinch as breeder shrimps perished en masse.
Farmers complained they could not pump fresh water to their ponds because of the oil slick, reportedly incurring losses of around VND60 million (US$3,740).
The slick first hit Quang Nam before spreading north to Da Nang City and then Quang Tri, Quang Ngai and Thua Thien Hue provinces.
