India: Himachal to popularise fish farming in high altitude areas
SHIMLA - With an aim to popularise fish farming in high altitude areas of the state, the Himachal Pradesh government has imported "Arctic Charr" (salvelinus alpinus) seed from Canada.Arctic Charr seed has been placed for incubation at three trout farms and survival percentage of over 90 per cent has been reported, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Fishery Harsh Mahajan said today.
The Minister said there are plans to distribute the seeds to farmers in tribal areas as the upper temperature tolerance of this fish is 14 degree celsius.
Mahajan said successful implementation of bilateral Indo-Norwegian Commercial Trout Farming Project has paved way for large-scale farming of rainbow trout in icy cold waters of the state.
After grasping the technology, the state earned a distinction by distributed it to the private sector, the minister added.
