Malaysian state devoted to nurturing fish production industry

The state is currently producing about 200,000 tonnes of fish annually valued at about RM730 to RM800 million.

State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail, said after fulfilling domestic demand, the state still excess fish for export, which generates earnings of over RM400 million per year. Therefore, the contribution of the fisheries sector to the state economy is significant and the state government is committed to nurture this important sector to realise its full potential, he said.

This was stated during Datuk Abdul Rahim's speech at the launching of Wetlands Day 2007, read out by his assistant, Datuk Bobbey Suan.

Rahim said Sabah's fish production is projected to reach about 457,000 tonnes with an estimated value of RM2.4 billion in 2010 with the advert of modern fishing technology and expansion of aquaculture production.
