Seafood exports to rise after EU commission approval: ministry

HA NOI - Seafood exports to Europe will increase by 10-15 per cent this year, according to the National Fisheries Quality Assurance and Veterinary Directorate (Nafiquaved), following key inspections by foreign officials.

Nafiquaved, which is under the Ministry of Fisheries, has reported that the European Commission for Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General (SANCO) recently approved the continued importation of Vietnamese seafood products following a safety and sanitation review.

It was SANCO’s second inspection since 2003.

"The last two visits have shown good results," says director of Nafiquaved, Nguyen Tu Cuong.

In a preliminary report, SANCO officials wrote that the country has made progress in monitoring antibiotic residues in seafood products. In the past, EU officials have rejected containers of seafood from Viet Nam due to antibiotic issues.

Japan and Russia have both tightened inspection procedures on food goods entering their markets from Viet Nam this year.

Cuong hopes that SANCO’s positive report and backing will open new opportunities for local companies to export seafood to the EU.
