Murray's Cauld is in danger of collapsing

After an investigation, the Competition Committee has ruled that the two Norwegian-owned companies can come together as one.

Marine Harvest are expected to dominate the board of the new company and the merger is believed to be the reason why Panfish has refused to accept any of three local offers for the defunct Kendal Fish Farm at Philiphaugh. Responsibility for maintaining the cauld goes with ownership of the cauld on the Ettrick.

There had been strong indications that Panfish was ready to sell quickly – the farm site has been blighted for housing or new industry because of flood fears.

Offers closed on February 14, but Panfish rejected all three bids as being too low. Local Regeneration Group chairman Dr Lindsay Neil told The Wee Paper: "Everything is now back in the boiling pot and no action will be taken to repair the cauld in the forseeable future.

"I fear we can expect its early demise. It is disappointing that a multi-national company cannot find it in itself to take action.
